Special lion dance at home

I’m not going to bite: The curious children of Rumah Shalom touching the red lion.

THE children squeaked and ran away when the lions “nibbled” at their fingers playfully amid the uplifting drum beats and cymbal clashes.

But they were not truly frightened, for they approached the lions once again with big smiles, aiming at the mandarin oranges that were thrown out from the lions’ big mouths.

The two lions from Lian Hua Gong Lion Dance Association were at Rumah Shalom in Bandar Puchong Jaya to bring festive cheer to some 40 children.

The performance was arranged by the Taman Kinrara and Bandar Puchong Jaya branch of Young Malaysians Movement (YMM) group, which had a fun afternoon with the orphans and children from single-parent families.

Together with seven volunteers, the group members entertained the children with breakdancing and got them to learn the moves.

“We also played educational games with them and conducted a simple course on recycling,” Taman Kinara YMM chairman Kenn Chiok said.

The group’s adviser, Selangor MCA Youth chief Dr Kow Cheong Wei, said the event was to ensure that the less fortunate were not forgotten during the festive season.

Those who wish to spread festive joy to Rumah Shalom can contact its executive director Rev S. Arulandu (012-296 5979) or Kenn (012-388 2907).
